“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8: 28
There are times when life simply doesn't make sense. We experience disappointments we didn't expect, trials we wouldn't have chose, and circumstances we don't understand. In those moments, Romans 8:28 reminds us of something we can know even when we don't know why.
Paul says, “We know.” Our confidence isn't based on understanding every circumstance but on knowing the God who is sovereign over every circumstance.
Notice that Paul doesn't say that all things are good. Some things are painful and difficult. Rather, he tells us that God works all things together for good. Even the circumstances we would never choose, God can use to accomplish His purposes in our lives.
And the “good” Paul has in mind is ultimately revealed in the next verse: that we would be “conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29). God's purpose isn't simply to make our lives easier or more comfortable. His purpose is to make us more like Christ.
That means we can trust God even when we cannot see what He is doing. The trial may be developing our faith. The disappointment may be teaching us dependence. The unanswered prayer may be drawing us closer to Him. We may not see the finished picture, but God does.
Whatever you are facing today, remember this: You may not understand God's plan, but you can trust God's purpose. He has not lost control, and He has not abandoned His children. He is faithfully working through every circumstance to accomplish His good purposes in those who love Him.
