The Torn Veil

"And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom." — Mark 15:38

Mark records a remarkable event that occurred at the very moment Jesus died on the cross. As Christ yielded up His spirit, the massive veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom. This was no ordinary curtain. The veil separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, where God's presence was symbolically manifested. Only the high priest could pass beyond it, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement.

For centuries, the veil stood as a reminder that sinful humanity could not freely approach a holy God. Sin had created a barrier that no amount of human effort could remove. Yet when Jesus cried, "It is finished," that barrier was removed forever.

Notice that the veil was torn from top to bottom. God Himself accomplished what man never could. Through the sacrificial death of His Son, the way into His presence was opened. The writer of Hebrews later explained that believers can now enter God's presence with confidence because of the blood of Jesus Christ.

The torn veil reminds us that Christianity is not a religion of distance but a relationship of access. We do not need a human priest to represent us before God, nor must we rely on rituals to gain His favor. Through Christ, we have direct access to the Father.

What a privilege this is! When we pray, we come boldly before God's throne of grace. When we worship, we draw near to Him through Christ. When we fail, we can confess our sins and find mercy because our Savior has already paid the price.

The next time you bow your head in prayer, remember the torn veil. The door has been opened. The barrier has been removed. Through Jesus Christ, we are welcomed into the presence of God.

"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)
